aboard the S/Y Southern Star to explore the world class ski and board touring of Greenland's Rugged West Coast. Our trip will start and finish In Maniitsoq where we will set sail for the deep fjords and island systems that hide steep couloirs, glacier cruisers and 5,000' peaks rising straight out of the water.
This trip is best suited for intermediate to advanced skiers/riders with prior touring experience. Expect average daily vertical from 2,500' - 4,000' (with the option for bigger days). No prior glacier skiing experience required, but experience using boot crampons and ice axe recommended.
Daytime temperatures average around freezing in April with nighttime temps dipping into the 20s Fahrenheit. Expect to see a range conditions including powder skiing, corn and everything in between. We have many terrain features and aspects to choose from giving us plenty of options to find the goods. Last year we skied 3 feet of perfect cold smoke June 3rd!
We will be just below the article circle for our trip and nearing the summer solstice this means up to 16 hours of daylight! It also makes for excellent corn skiing conditions with prime skiing happening later in the day and lasting longer.
The Southern Star is a tried and tested Arctic vessel with over 17 major polar expeditions including 2 of the Northwest Passage. It's rugged functionality and nimbleness is combined with cozy comfort making it the ideal craft to explore the arctic.

There are only two operators that have international connections to Greenland, Icelandair and Air Greenland. The latter is the only operator for domestic flights within Greenland. For international connections to Greenland Icelandair has options out of Reykjavik, Iceland and Air Greenland out of Copenhagen, Denmark. We recommend you book your flights in two segments. The first to either Nuuk, Greenland (if travelling through Reykjavik) and using Icelandair or Copenhagen using your preferred airline. For the second segment you must book the remaining flights directly through Air Greenland. If using Icelandair you can book your flight all the way to Nuuk and then switch to Air Greenland for a separate booking to Maniitsoq. If flying to Copenhagen you can use whichever airline works best for you then book the remainder of your travel from Copenhagen to Maniitsoq directly through Air Greenland. The Copenhagen route has the most options and will likely be the best itinerary for you.
Air Greenland has strict baggage restrictions. Be sure to review them before packing and deciding which ticket type to purchase.
Don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions about travel logistics.
What will the daily routine be on the ship?
We will wake to warm breakfast and finish with a hot dinner. Skies the limit for what happens in between! We have no strict schedule and will do what makes the most sense given the conditions, weather and interests of the team.
How long do we stay at anchorages?
Typically we stay at anchorages for one or two nights but may stay longer if we find good skiing and folks are psyched on the terrain options.
I am concerned about sea sickness? Is that an issue on our voyage?
The fjords we will be navigating are protected from the open ocean and tend to be quite calm, although rough waters are not impossible. If you are concerned we recommend talking to your doctor about seasickness medication.
What type of wildlife will we see?
This is one of the highlights of the trip! The Greenlandic coast is home to an abundance of Artic wildlife with super stars including Musk Ox, Arctic Fox, Reindeer and several whale and seal species! Read more about Greenlandic wildlife here.
What will the food be like on the ship? Can you accommodate my dietary restrictions?
Expect a diverse menu with many familiar tastes to cuisine we have available in the US. We do our best to accommodate all dietary needs. Please be sure to describe your situation in detail during the onboarding.
How can my loved ones track the position of the yacht I am sailing on?
The current position of the Southern Star is available at: https://share.garmin.com/share/navigare
Can you take a shower during the cruise?
There are three bathrooms on the Southern Star yacht, two of which have showers available 24 hours a day.
Can I charge my mobile phone on the yacht?
Standard power outlets are available on board for charging electronic devices. These are available throughout the cruise.
Is alcohol consumption allowed onboard?
Yes - responsible consumption only. This is strictly enforced and your guide and captain have the right to prohibit consumption for any reason at any time. You may bring a small amount with you. We recommend using duty free while you travel.
Arrival in Maniitsoq, taxi to hotel and check-in, welcome dinner with guides and other guests. Your guides will help you arrange taxi service from the airport to the hotel... perhaps a couple corn turns downtown if you are feeling adventurous!
Shortly after breakfast we will grab our luggage and head down the dock to board the S/Y Southern Star. Guides will brief you on timing and logistics during the welcome dinner. After settling into cabins and meeting the crew we will take part in a safety briefing and learn about the minutia of life aboard the ship before departing the harbor. Lunch as we sail with the chance for an afternoon ski before we hit a good anchorage for the evening and dinner.
All rooms are double occupancy.
All meals are prepared by the very talented crew of the Southern Star... We may even have the chance to incorporate some fresh caught Cod or other arctic delicacies! We will have an opportunity to pack bag lunches for the day after breakfast.
Each morning we wake surrounded by towering peaks and glaciers with boundless ski potential. With sunset at 10PM length of day is on our side allowing for a casual breakfast and lunch pack before boarding the zodiac for the day's excursion. We will be exploring the deep fjords and islands north of Maniitsoq which harbor peaks up to 6,000' tall and a wide variety of terrain from mellow glacier cruises to steep endurance couloirs. Single runs can boast 4,000'+ of vertical and outings can easily be tailored to suit the group's terrain and commitment interest. The spring season will allow us to pursue cold powdery north slopes or delicious corn on south slopes. We will target whichever option mother nature has best cued up for us. The norm for anchorages include icebergs, wildlife, tidewater glaciers and jaw-dropping mountain vistas. After the day's outing we will enjoy a hot meal on the ship. We may spend a few nights at one anchorage or move to the next during the evening or overnight hours.
Seven days of skiing in a row can be a lot and we encourage folks to take rest day(s) as needed. Rest and relax onboard with a good book and a drink on the deck or take a zodiac cruise and drop a line in the water and try to catch us some dinner! Our anchorages are often great spots for Cod fishing and wildlife viewing.
We arrive back in Maniitsoq either early the morning of 4/28 or the evening before. After breakfast its time to pack up, head out and start processing all the memories. We will help you arrange transport to the airport or additional lodging depending on your after-trip itinerary.
We recommend booking your air travel after mid morning on 4/28. If you wish to stay in Greenland we are happy to help you arrange additional lodging.
